watch your everloving hind end at this one folks, they play for blood. I was flagged in several months back so they could see my paperwork and several hundred dollars later I have a story to tell. To begin with I thought that my logs were up both up to date and accurate and I told the officer that I the day before in North Dakota there was no problem. He asked to see my slip from ND and that is where my real troubles began. The first thing he noted was that the time on the ND printout and the time on my log was off by 19 minutes and he used this as an excuse to crawl up inside my paperwork. Once he found this discrepency he took the other port officer, who was dealing with another driver aside and they spoke for a minute and then the other officer took the other driver to the other end of the counter to complete their business. I got a funny feeling and started to look around and sure enought I spotted the microphone where he was recording everything we said. First he accused me falsifying my logs from Blackriver Falls, MN to Miles City, MT because I wrote down 819 miles claiming that it was 859 miles. I explained that it was my intent to stop at Glendive,MT but there was no place to park and that the rest area was also full so I went to the first available parking place which was Miles City, MT. He made a big point about how his computer program said it was 859 miles and that constituted a falsified log book even though when you go exit by exit and use the Rand McNally figures it comes out to be acturally 829 miles (we were both wrong) and drivers are penalized by the fact that most mileage programs run from the center of a zipcode to center of zipcode which can cost us in some cases 50 miles or more. To make a long stroy short, he spent the whole time talking down to me like I was some kind of trash, or at least that he was better than me. One very interesting comment that he made was that he was at top pay, but they were able to earn merit increases; and all along I was lead to believe that it was unconstitutional for a governmental agency to base the compensation of law enforctment officers on the number of citations they wrote! Silly truck driver, did I mention that I also have nearly 30 years experience in the Criminal Justice field and have instructed staff in proper Report Writing technique and that the first rule of writing any report is objectivity and that does not mean that the object is to write a report. Any way he sent me to my truck for 40 minutes whiile he prepared my citation (about the same length of time he was recording what was said), and then put me out of service at the time I was given my ticket instead of when I was flagged in costing me another 2 1/2 hours. And did I mention that while he was busy with me the overweight alarm went off several times, twice on one truck and he and his partner who was busy crucifying another driver never looked up and they were the only ones on duty at the time. Ten hours later when I went inside to check out and leave the night shift officer made the comment to me that he was suprised that there was only one truck out of service because the afternoon shift offices were having a private contest to see who could write the most citations. Nest time you are near the Spokane (Liberty Lake) scale check out how many trucks are parked in the East end of their lot, this is their out of service area, and you will usually see 2 or 3 espedially in late afternoon or evening; and if you happen to get a red light God help you!
