Weigh Station Alert- Las Vegas, Nevada

Thursday, December 4th, 2008

12/4/08 Yet again drivers tell us that officers have the north bound I 15 scales at mile marker 25 in Nevada wide open. You can normally expect these scales to be locked up tight, but we’ve been getting more reports on this weigh station than any other, so don’t go assuming they’ll be closed any more! Drivers report that about 5 DOT officers are out inspecting trucks. This report is accurate as of 12:30 Las Vegas time today.

CVSA Brake Safety Week September 21-27, 2008

Sunday, September 21st, 2008

The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) is out in force this coming week to promote brake safety in their Operation Air Brake campaign.

If your brakes are out of adjustment, we suggest you have them adjusted (or, better yet, learn how to adjust them yourself). If you are unsure, we suggest you have them checked. Not only is it unsafe to travel with brakes that are not properly adjusted, but, this coming week, it could cost you time and money!

Officers will be performing Level IV commercial vehicle inspections at an increased level during Operation Air Brake. The emphasis of the inspections is on the air brake systems, which means that officers will be taking a close look at your brakes.

2290 Heavy Highway Use Tax Due August 31, 2008

Tuesday, July 15th, 2008

The 2290 Heavy Higway Vehicle Use Tax is a $550 federal excise tax that must be paid on all vehicles that weigh 55,000 lbs or more and operate on public highways. The reporting period is from July 1st in any given year to June 30 the next year. The tax bill that is currently due is for the reporting period of July 1st, 2008, through June 30, 2009. If the vehicle will not put on more than 5,000 miles in the coming year (or, if it is agricultural, if it won’t put on more than 7,500 miles in the year), the $550 payment isn’t required, but you still must file form 2290.

Fuel Theft is on the Rise- 7 Tips for Truckers

Sunday, July 6th, 2008

Fuel theft has always been a concern in the trucking industry. But with average fuel prices on the verge of breaking the $5 per gallon mark, it’s becoming an epidemic. High fuel prices are putting a squeeze on truckers, and some of them are getting desperate. Some are considering stealing fuel from other drivers for use in their own trucks. Others are considering stealing fuel in order to sell it to truckers who want to pay less. Either way, truck owners are getting nervous about the go-go juice.

Weigh Station Alert- Washington, DC, I 95/I 495 Maryland- 7/1/08

Tuesday, July 1st, 2008

Road side inspections are expected through 3 pm today.

The Washington Beltway Weigh Station is often open to weigh trucks and perform inspection, but, today, officers are pulling trucks over for road side inspections. Some inspections will be performed on the shoulder of the freeway, other inspections will be performed at the weigh station or other nearby location- officers will escort the truck to the inspection location.

This is valid for trucks traveling north or south bound on I 95 or trucks traveling I 495. Don’t be surprised to see disco lights behind you today and be prepared for various levels of inspections. Thanks to Lee J. for the heads up!

Welcome, Lockridge Report Listeners!

Tuesday, March 4th, 2008

Thank you for listening to John’s interview with Evan Lockridge today on Sirius Radio, Road Dog Trucking channel 147 (the Lockridge Report airs weekdays 2 pm eastern/1 pm central). We’d like to welcome you to The Coops Community. Feel free to leave comments on weigh station pages and articles, to join in the conversation in the message board, and to drop us a note with questions or concerns by using the “contact us” form.

As an edit, we’d like to mention an omission. During the interview, Evan asked about our staff. We neglected to mention our message board moderator “Russellmania” who volunteers much of his time helping us to keep the message board free of spam and keeping the website up to date.

Those of you looking to join in the Weigh Station Alert system will need to sign up for the free CoopsAreOpen.com Newsletter. The newsletter goes out the 1st of every month and shows updates to the site and other items of interest that you won’t necessarily otherwise learn of. Weigh Station Alerts go out when we get them. If we see DOT working hard or if a driver informs us of a DOT crack down, we send out an alert so that you can be prepared. We need your eyes and ears to let us know what’s going on- we can’t be everywhere!

Is DOT “After Us”?

Tuesday, March 4th, 2008

As a result of the news story run by Austin, Texas, NBC affiliate KXAN about CoopsAreOpen.com, there are some rumors floating around.

One of these rumors is that Texas DOT is looking for us (and by us, I mean us here at CoopsAreOpen). They’re not. If they were, we’re easy to find. Just click “Contact Us” and send us a message.

Another one of these rumors is that CoopsAreOpen.com is giving truckers a bad name. We’re not. We provide truckers with as much information as possible about weigh stations, rules and regulations, and enforcement procedures. Information doesn’t give truckers a bad name. Organizations like CRASH and PATT aren’t going to like truckers whether we provide the information or not.

For those of you who’d like the real scoop about CoopsAreOpen.com, come look through the site, leave comments, contact us, and join our message board. You’ll find out that we provide you with a platform to share your knowledge and to learn from what others know.
