This scale was opened weeks after the 9/11 attacks, and was initially meant to screen trucks entering the Ft. McHenry Tunnel. It has been opened only a few times since for random DOT inspections and to screen loads before entering the tunnel. On another note, just beyond the tunnel at the Northern toll plaza, Maryland Transportation police regularly perform DOT inspections and screen trucks in both North and South directions. The same is true at the 895 Toll plaza North bound and just before the tunnel enterance on the Southbound side. The Key bridge is also staffed occasionally by DOT enforcement on both sides at the toll plaza !
