I have a Pioneer in-dash GPS but it's for cars and it won't route me on a state route. It's not very good for trucking.

Any suggestions?

I have several friends using CoPilot- but you have to have a laptop hooked up and accessible

I use my map, my brain and common sense. I don't need some computer telling me where to turn.

I agree w/Big_Dog however when one garners dirs that put one in a residential neighborhood, well, maybe a GPS might have been helpful.
I'm not paranoid much yet I believe that GPS units are another way for the feds to track ones whereabouts since the feds wanna know other info about us for no other reason than CONTROL.
"To GPS or not to GPS, this is the question".

I've had a GPS map put me in a bad spot a time or two... roads that dead end but the map shows them going through... that's not fun.

General Positioning Strategy used to be using the Stars at nite as a guide or in using landmarks in the day when they were known.
landmarks nowadays are man made and shift sometimes.
navigating at nite is useable except for being near or in ANY city and of course when it is raining.
Then again, this could be how that drunken idiot columbus discovered "India".
The Vikings generally KNEW where they were, so go figure.

As to the dead-ends: these are streets that have yet to be finished or "stretched" and will be, yet they haven't obviously been, yet.
Texas has LOTS of streets that have yet to be finished as they understand urban sprawl and are basically ready. One can view these in El Paso, Austin, San Antonio, Amarillo, among other cities.

Co-Pilot!! That’s the way to go for all you slackers that can't read or just refuse to go buy a map. (I'm not leaving myself out) Shocked

You do need a laptop to use this program. It will keep you on major truck routes. I've had Co-pilot now for 3 years. It's pretty accurate for about 90% of the time and gets updated by other truck drivers who call in to Co-Pilot and tell them the mistakes. However the other 10% it's not accurate, you mind as well have the Pioneer in dash unit.

The down fall is its cost the first time. I paid $300-$400 for it. Evil or Very Mad It comes with everything you need to get started.(Lap top not included)

For a simple $99.00 Razz plus shipping you can get the upgrade every year. I say simple because after the first agonizing $400, the $99 is pretty simple.

I also have the Pioneer in dash system....can we say SUCKS!!! Great to help find Best Buy and the Super Wal-Marts but not for truck routing.....

Again, I repeat myself, I use my map and common sense. I'm not going to have some computer tell me where to go when I can use my own judgement instead. You let some computer progam do all the thinking and you loose your sense of direction- like using a calculator all the time and then you can't add, subtract, multiply or divide.

Gotta use the grey matter some.

My husband keeps trying to throw the map away- but if I didn't have that Atlas we wouldn't get anywhere!

The GPS has a good map, but it's limited as to what it can do.

I agree with Big Dog- need to use your brain!

But it's nice to have something to fall back on when your brain doesn't feel like working (or when the map doesn't show the road or what the road name is!).

ALL maps are only as good as when they were printed.
With the constant influx of building everywhere, it is amazing enough that ANY map is produced that even coorelates to the environs it is designed to appear for.
I prefer to use the OLD way of doing things: Ones Brain and a Map.
The only electronic device I have is the Nextel phone which is supposed to be linked with some sattellite yet the phone refuses to operate between Pecos and about 80 miles from El Paso, TX. among other areas in these states.
A Brain, A Compass and a MAP, what more does one need?? Confused Wink

Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing
There IS a computer in the truck--the "brain" that "runs" the truck since it is a 2000 model and has an automatic with all the extra swithes and servos.
I don't have a Lap Top just the "computer" in me head.

You don't have a lap top? You must be spending a fortune on the Flying J internet kiosk to post here...

Naaawwww, notice the dates of me posts as there are gaps of time. I ONLY post from home except that one time when I was at an IdleAire site last month in El Paso.
I sometimes post from the yard yet it is a mere 3 miles from the home so I consider it the same thing. Smile
Nope, I willn't spend $12.00 an hour to post from ANY kiosk as it just isn't that important. Wink
