| I drove all day Saturday, Sunday and Monday... other than Monday afternoon it was fairly light traffic... Man, those four wheelers really mess things up though! |

| Quote: | Crash that injured trooper prompts police plea
Sep 5, 2006 08:53 PM
David MacAnally/Eyewitness News
Lafayette - An Indiana State Police trooper is in serious condition at a Lafayette hospital after his patrol car was hit by a semi trailer Tuesday.
The accident happened on I-65 near the State Road 28 exit and shut down the interstate northbound for more than four hours.
Sgt. Richard Kelly's trooper car was mashed and mangled. "He had pulled over a tractor trailer for speed," said Sgt. Brian Olehy.
As Trooper Kelly worked paperwork in his cruiser a second truck came from behind, suddenly skidded and jackknifed into the rear of the trooper car. That shoved the cruiser under the truck in front.
The trucker Trooper Kelley first stopped now rushed to help the trooper whose car caught fire.
"I didn't think he would have made it.He got out under his own power. I asked him if he was all right. He said yeah, for just crawling out of a crushed car," said Scott Kunkel, truck driver.
Maybe it was thanks to the toughness he built up on the Frankfort High School football team, says his sergeant. He was a 1989 ALL STAR team member.
"Looking at that vehicle and my experience as an officer it's amazing anyone survived and let alone was able to punch the remnants of his door open," said Sgt. Olehy.
Trooper Kelly used his cell phone to phone in the crash.
Highway traffic stops are some of the riskiest things police do. The crash is prompting a word of caution from Sgt. Olehy. "You see the police officer; he's coming up behind. You move immediately over to the right and stop. You're coming up on him - move over a lane or slow down. Those are the kinds of things that not only keep you safe but keep you from becoming involved in something like this and keeps the police and emergency workers safe."
Police want to know why the second trucker, Francisco Gallegos of Milwaukee, slammed into the trooper's car. No charges have been filed yet.
Sgt. Kelly has a neck fracture, plus cuts and bruises. Police hope the 36-year-old husband and father can go home Wednesday.

Francisco Gallegos in MY opinion needs to have his license revoked for about 6 months if not permanently.
How does one NOT see ANY Trooper on the side of ANY road with the flashing lights??
Too many S-T-U-P-I-D drivers out and about.
When one cannot move over a lane then one merely needs slow down a bit but not all at once, sheesh.
He probably doesn't have that driving gig anymore and it should be difficult acquiring another somewhere.
I guess a lesson here is pull over on the road ONLY when there is enough room to SAFELY be off the road or simply go to the next exit, specifically at night. One is not "evading the police" if one wants to act professionally towards other drivers including himself and the police can understand this as well or they ain't much worth anything.
With the propensity of increases in truck wrecks that do not involve other vehicles, it only makes sense to act sensibly.
IF COMMON SENSE IS, THEN WHY ISN'T IT??
The picture of that car that Trooper Kelly crawled out of is reminiscent of DUI wrecks except usually with most of the damage to the front of vehicles. He was obviously a very relaxed person otherwise he might not be breathing. _________________ All Women are Ladies till they prove otherwise. |
