Same way I drive...under normal circumstances brakes are made for stopping ...not slowing down. If you've got a good "Jake" you can descend I-70 in Colorado from the brake check area just outside the Eisenhower tunnel, with 45,000 lbs. of beer in the box, at the 35 mph truck speed limit and never touch the brakes til you get to the bottom...You could do the same without an engine brake but you'd be creeping down at a far slower speed. It's not uncommon to go a quarter million miles without having to replace the shoes/pads... _________________ Who is John Galt? |

So, make sure if you Steal a truck, don't drive it across a scale. (boy that's hard to type without laughing) Oh, I'm sure it does other things too but you have to get Policing Personnel that understand it, or even care.
The FLIR checks for Brakes by looking at the 'heat signature' at the wheels. Of course I used to never hit my brakes until I actually got to the stop sign. I could actually "drive" so I downshifted all the way in. Interesting thought though: If the thing has no Heat Signature, you wonder if they would bring you in and tell you ALL your brakes aren't working? (if you didn't put 2 and 2 together, if all your brakes aren't working, how did you stop?) |
I used the BLUE button or the Trailer Brakes since the FLIR only "reads Tractor Brake heat", otherwise i don't recall as I was really tired man. _________________ All Women are Ladies till they prove otherwise. |

Most of these are "steerable" heads with zoom. They look for heat and also show lack of heat. Cold brakes, cold tires or overheated hubs, exhaust hot spots surrounding the pipe which indicates leaks, etc. And actually, trailers are the usual culprits quite simply because it probably isn't yours and was towed from some dock or company lot in unknown condition.
This is enough to produce "probable cause" for a D.O.T. inspection. |

VA has redefined the laws surrounding UCR, Registrations, (etc) making it more clear [easier] to write citations. Fines are VERY hefty from the $ grubbers. $250 + $20 court fee per violation. The expectation is to write EACH & EVERY violation that yields a $270 fine EACH! The rumor is that the UCR could be written for each year separately back to 3 years even if it was obtained this year but there is evidence that your company traveled in the State those past years. EACH is made out to the DRIVER, COMPANY DRIVER OR NOT!!! Although it's a civil violation, I could still see it effecting your CDL.
Come THIS July 1, make sure you have your ducks in a row... |
