Hours of Service
A new HOS rule issued by the Obama Administration should include the following basic safety parameters:
• 24-hour circadian schedule
• Lower daily driving and work time limits
• Lower weekly driving and work time maximums
• Increased daily off-duty time, including in sleeper berths
• Increased end-of-week rest time
• Recognition of safety hazards of night-time driving
• Universal Electronic On-Board Recorder (EOBR) requirement
Daily Shift Drive Time Maximum:
No more than 8 consecutive hours of driving per shift, based on extensive research findings that show dramatic increase in relative risk of crashes after 8 consecutive hours of driving.
Daily Shift Work Time Maximum:
12 hour work shift; 8 hours of driving, and 4 hours of other work and \ or rest breaks as the driver chooses
Daily Shift Off-Duty Time Maximum:
General rule:
12 hours of consecutive off-duty rest time to ensure minimum of 7-8 hours of sleep each night that research shows is needed to perform safely, and allow time for drivers to perform other daily non-work tasks
Sleeper Berth:
More than 8 continuous hours to ensure minimum of 7-8 hours of sleep each night that research shows is needed to expunge sleep debt and recover safe performance
Weekly Total Driving Time Maximum:
Maximum 40 hours 7 days
Weekly Total Work Time Maximum:
Maximum 60 hours in 7 days
End of Week Off-duty Time Minimum:
Minimum 48-hour off duty layover before starting another tour of duty |

WELL DONE Fozzy and WELCOME BACK!!
The 40-60 hour MAXIMUM HOS would certainly help many drivers and make trucking just that much more interesting.
Probably help instigate/initiate Hourly Pay too...oh...uh...well...hmm.
Eight hrs max driving a day....hmmm, well why not since that's about the time limit for some newbies (since '00) like from Dawn to Dusk or in their Solar Powered Trucks.
With the way shprs/rcvrs act, one could very easily be down and out for 2 days and/or have a 48 hr reset at another terrible location.
HOW would the Inclement Weather Allowance operate?

Welcome back Fozzy
These are some f'd up HOS. You can tell whoever came up with these rules has never been in or around a truck. 8hrs of driving is BS. Not unless everything is going terminal to terminal and relayed. I can see things getting screwed up already. If we think that parking is a problem now. Here's a good example. Your approaching the 8th hr in the middle of the GWB at rushour on a holiday weekend. I can just see how this 8hr of driving is gonna work over here on the East coast. _________________

Good to see you back Fozzy, hope to see ya around here more often.
Well, the economy is already screwed up pretty bad why not screw it up some more. If implemented this would increase shipping costs as well as cause shortages in the stores...and the parking situation...well, we all know how that's gonna turn out... _________________ Who is John Galt? |
