Last week I got a ticket for having my blue neons on while parked at a Florida rest area.
I have several neon and LED tubes under my tractor. I had been parked for over thirty minutes when super trooper came over and demanded to see my license and registration. I asked him what the problem was and he refused to answer. He then demanded in a more threatening tone to see my documentation. I asked him again for the reason he was asking then he responded,"Do we need to go further?"
So I go in my truck to get my license and registration. I close my driver's side door while I am looking. He comes around and opens the door up. Can he do that? I did not give him permission. I hand him the papers when I get them. "Blue is my color!" I cannot belive this.
"You mean that it is illegal for me to have these lights on while I am parked at a rest area?"
"You have blue lights emmitting from the front of your vehicle. That is illegal and I observed it." Now all of this sounds like no big deal when you are reading this here on a message board. I cannot convey enough to you about how rude and threatening this officer was. I have dealt with one other officer like this in my 11 years of driving. They were both the kind of cop who scares the crap out of you because you are not sure what he is going to do next. Anyway, back to the story. He then takes my license into the cruiser to write a citation for a whole $71.00 non-moving violation. He pointed to the front of the cruiser - which was parked about 10 feet away from the front of my truck - and told me to wait there. I am waitng. As I looked at the front of the truck - I cannot see any blue lights anywhere. I do have some behind the grill and above the windshield, but they were not on. If they would have been on, you probably would have seen me on Fox News as the Florida State Police SWAT team had me surrounded in the rest area. I peeked my head around the side of the truck to see at what angle you could see my blue lights at. The Cop yells my name.
"John, I told you to stand right here! What is your problem (which is very coincedental becasue I was thinking exactly the same thing)? I need to see your hands right right now." Now some of you might think this could be proper police behaviour and I was acting as a threat to this officer by peeking my head around the truck. I am 145 lbs soaking wet. This cop is litterally double my size. I was wearing shorts and a tee shirt. The officer must have been sure I was going to pull my AK 47 out of my shorts to put a cap in him. "I am about ready to call DOT and we will just go through your whole truck." Very loud and very threatening. "Why are you so nervous? What do you have to hide?" he yells. Hmm, maybe because I am dealing with an officer who is acting very erratic and he has a gun? That was my first thought.
"I am not nervous, I am talking with my wife" I responded. MY wife in the passenger seat watching the whole thing. This was the best I could come up with. In hindsight, the best possible response would have been that I wasa feeling threatened by the officer who was acting what I considered to be irrationally.
The officer gets out of the cruiser and tells me that he wrote me a ticket for innappropriate/unsafe vehicle. He then further explained that it was $71.00 and not a moving violation. "You need to sign at the bottom." I started to read the ticket. "I said, you need to sign on the bottom!"
"I would like to read what it is I am signing."
"You can read it when I give you copy. Sign it now" So at this point, I am tired of dealing with super trooper. I signed the ticket. I take the ticket and read it. He put a Florida statute number on it so I went online to see what it was. It pertained to the use of red and blue emergency lights. The statute under the one he cited was the one stating that blue lights were illegal. What an idiot.
Anyway - my salute to the Florida State Police for keeping their rest areas safe from the blue light criminals.
Happy trucking |

Did you fight it or pay it??
I'm merely curious and NOT casting aspersions.
When the cop asked what I was doing when I was waiting for him to complete his harrassment, I would've said something like "do your job and quit harrassing me" or words to that effect or I really can't say since I wasn't there nor I have been thru that type of harrassment since I don't run those dangerous and life threatening lights, gosh.
I know that having been through a ticket w/ a particularly annoying cop who wanted to appear as a bada$$, I merely did not give into it and read the ticket BEFORE signing and signed s-l-o-w-l-y.
I'm sure he's already well known as an a$$hole so reporting him to the watch commander may be a waste of time, or not......who knows.
I hold zero respect for cops that come accross as a$$holes except the ones in jails as they deal w/ problematic people ALL the time, so their attitudes are acceptable, but not for street cops.
Same applies for coop cops. _________________ All Women are Ladies till they prove otherwise. |

| I am going to have my attorney write the FL state police headquarters a nice little letter. I have a freind who is plugged in with the police down there. He told me to do that and ask why the officer felt that he had to approach me in such a rude and over-threatening way. If the officer has any other complaints in his file, he will have to go through a bunch of BS. That will be my way of saying "Hey :censored: - remember me?" |

Yes, very good!
I don't understand how the neon can be confused with the blue lights used on emergency vehicles or at all.
I believe the cop tried to become a truck driver and having failed miserably for a few reasons, he resumed being a cop with a bad attitude towards Truckers. That's MY figuring.
I hope those dimwits don't "require" some sort of appearance for some pointless reason(s) as some states do for some supposed infractions. _________________ All Women are Ladies till they prove otherwise. |

Back on Nov.1 of 2006 the day before my birthday I got a ticket for running down a poor NOT A TRUCK ROUTE sign that was not even marked on the road that I was traveling down(STUPID GILROY. CALI.)
So I got the ticket for running down the sign and a little poll and some small tree take that environmentalist. Anyways that sign I couldnt see anyways cause of the stupid tree in the way blocking it and if you know local cops any they know nothing about everything and everything about nothing when it comes to looking at things that involve a big truck _________________ I'm GUILTY of trying to make a living. |

When I was younger I got a ticket for being parked facing the wrong direction on a street in my little pickup.
I was attempting to jump start my dads car that had quit(Bad alternator). Cop wrote me up in front of my dad.
I went to court and told the judge my story and won the case. _________________

You mean this one!
Sorry Dan, I couldn't resist...ROTFLMAO
Actually, at the time you told me about it and sent the picture, I thought it was cool (I still do, btw)...kind of poetic justice... _________________ Who is John Galt? |
